on moving

February 9, 2011 by Heather

A quote from one of Andrew’s favorite authors, Donald Miller:

“…Got gives life to you to live, and you can either tell meaningful stories or boring stories.  We can’t wait around anymore for God to make something happen in our lives, meanwhile we shop at Bed Bath & Beyond.  The truth is, God gives you wisdom and direction and morality and His presence and support, and then asks you to live, to conquer, to risk and experience the whole of life.  People grow when they are in motion.”

While I am not a fan of the part about waiting for God to make something happen (I believe He is always with us and making things happen, working in and through us and molding us), I really like the overall message of what he is saying here.  I think the underlining message of it is to be courageous, because, really, why not be?  Life is too short to live within self-set boundaries.  I see our move to Colorado as a huge step for us, and not just because it is pretty far away or whatever, but because it is something that, until now, seemed so far beyond our reach.  By saying to ourselves and to each other, let’s do this.. what the heck are we waiting for?, we reached out and grabbed the seemingly unreachable by the balls.  To know that we are actually going to do it is, in a word, exhilarating.  It is scary and exciting all at once.  It is a chance for us to be in a place where we have to solely rely on each other and on God, which to be honest isn’t something we’ve truly had to do yet.  We are not moving to get away from anything – we are moving toward everything, toward our future.  And while it may be sad for our parents and families who live here, I hope with all my heart that they can somehow be able to see the good in what we have decided to do and that they can be genuinely happy for us.  It’s not that far away, really.

Another note on moving:  On the way back from our date on Monday, Andrew expressed his need to figure out a way to periodically get back to Arkansas in order to get a hair cut from Cindy.  What is it with this guy and his hair all of a sudden?  Who is this person?  After I called him a diva, he said that he was kidding and that he had already decided he would settle for the local Sport Clips.  I’m glad he has a plan for his precious locks.
