On Wednesday, Parker woke up absolutely convinced that it was Andrew’s birthday. The first few times he excitedly announced that “TODAY IS DADDY’S BIRTHDAY!,” we gently told him that daddy’s birthday was, in fact, last month and had already been celebrated. But once he started talking about the cake and presents and party and surprises… well, I figured what the heck. If he thinks it’s Andrew’s birthday, let’s go with it. We made a cookie cake (I used this wonderful recipe and a different frosting one I already had) and threw a party after dinner — complete with wild party guests, candle blowing, music, and dancing. Parker had Andrew go back to our room while we set it all up. He kept running back there and shouting “SURPRISE DADDY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY,” until I gave Andrew the all-clear that the party was actually ready.
I am not entirely sure where he got it in his head that it was Andrew’s birthday, but the kid knows how to make someone feel special, that’s for sure. Andrew doesn’t particularly enjoy celebrating his actual birthday (???), so it was kind of nice to see him excited about a “birthday” party. The last thing I said to him before we fell asleep that night was “Happy Birthday,” so I guess Parker had us all convinced in the end.
